CBD Isolate-The Facts

With CBD available to purchase in different forms, it can be difficult to know what to choose. We take a look at CBD isolate and its potential benefits.

What does CBD stand for?

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of many chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. CBD is generally sourced from hemp, a botanical class of cannabis sativa that is grown specifically for industrial and medicinal use.

CBD doesn’t contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana that produces a ‘high’. Studies continue to investigate the potential benefits of CBD in the treatment of a wide range of conditions including Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, eczema and anxiety.

What is CBD Isolate?

There are three main types of cannabidiol, the difference between each being their content.

Full-spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabis plant extracts including other cannabinoids, terpenes, essential oils and up to 0.3% THC. Such a low amount of THC is not strong enough to have any significant psychoactive effects.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains several cannabis plant compounds but is entirely free of THC.

Finally, CBD isolate is the purest crystal form of CBD. It contains 99% pure CBD and no other cannabis plant compounds. It is derived from the hemp plant and is devoid of all other ingredients and matter.

How is CBD isolate made?

CBD is generally extracted from the hemp plant using four different methods:

– carbon dioxide extraction
– steam distillation
– solvent extraction
– lipid extraction

As CBD isolate is a more refined product, it goes through additional processes to strip away all other phytocannabinoids, isolating the CBD from the other components of the plant.

How is CBD Isolate used?

CBD isolate generally comes in three different forms:

CBD isolate crystal. This is CBD in pure, crystalline form. It can be mixed into liquids.

CBD isolate powder. The crystal can be ground into a powder, making it easy to ingest in gummies or teas. Alternatively, CBD powder can be taken sublingually, applied directly under the tongue where it is absorbed by the mucous membranes and delivered directly into the bloodstream.

CBD isolate oil. A carrier oil such as hemp seed oil or MCT oil can be used to help your body absorb and process CBD. CBD oil can be taken sublingually or applied topically to the skin.

What are the benefits of CBD Isolate over Full Spectrum?

Studies have shown that, used in its purest form as CBD isolate, the benefits of CBD are perhaps less-noticeable than when using a full-spectrum product. Some argue that full or broad-spectrum CBD products containing other cannabis components are more effective than CBD isolate, offering an ‘entourage effect’.

Equally, research has also found no change in the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors when terpenes were added to THC, suggesting that the removal of these terpenes is not necessarily detrimental.

While it may not offer the same benefits as broad or full-spectrum products, CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. This makes it a popular choice for those who would like to investigate the benefits of CBD without the potential interference of other cannabis compounds. CBD isolate is also chosen by some for its absence of smell and taste

Users of CBD isolate avoid any risk of ingesting trace amounts of THC. Although it is highly unlikely, trace amounts of THC in full-spectrum CBD products could theoretically produce a positive result in a drug screening test.

Finally, CBD isolate offers benefits when it comes to dosage. It is easy to measure an accurate dosage of CBD isolate, enabling uses to create customised mixtures.
