We all know that the CBD industry is relatively new! And whilst the average UK consumer is just starting to become familiar with CBD oils, CBD skincare is still a bit of a mystery. So, today we’re answering some of the most common questions about CBD skincare products.

1. Do CBD skincare products actually work?

Short answer: Definitely, they do! But see long the answer below.

Long answer: With inflammation at the root of almost everything – from chronic pain to ageing – CBD extracts and oils can ease aches, soothe stress and prolong your skin’s health. But it really depends on the problem you’re trying to solve. CBD skincare products do work on a wide variety of skincare issues, but CBD is not a ‘cure-all.’ A better question might be:

2. What do CBD skincare products help with?

Short answer: inflammation, redness, signs of stress and ageing, acne, eczema, and cell-renewal.

Long answer: Studies have shown that CBD can have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.  And inflammation affects more than just redness or swelling of the skin – it also plays a role in skin dryness, acne and signs of ageing. Therefore, using CBD oil in skincare is a clever and natural way to help with all of these issues. And of course, when CBD is combined with other essential skincare ingredients, such as natural herbs and extracts, omega oils and vitamins, the overall product will have an ‘entourage effect’ – allowing your skin to benefit from the combined overall effect of premium ingredients.

3. Are CBD beauty and skincare products legal?

Short answer: Absolutely!

Long answer: In the UK, any product containing CBD is completely legal – as long as it contains less than 0.2% THC (the chemical compound found in marijuana that gets you ‘high’.) So, as long as you’re not buying a product that contains THC, then this is legal.

4. Do they work better than ordinary cosmetics?

Short answer: Well, it depends!

Long answer: Once again, this depends on what problem you’re trying to solve. However, if you’re looking to achieve rejuvenated, restored skin and maintain a youthful glow, then yes! CBD skincare products will work better than ordinary ones. This is because, as we’ve already mentioned, CBD works to reduce inflammation, signs of ageing, and helps to stimulate skin cell renewal. And when combined with premium ingredients, you’ll receive all of the benefits of an ordinary skincare or beauty product, with an added boost from CBD.

5. Is there anything I should look out for?

Short answer: A trustworthy company, high CBD-concentration, 0% THC.

Long answer: When looking for CBD skincare products, you want to make sure you’re buying from a trustworthy company! There are a lot of CBD retailers out there. And many of these retailers have been criticised for spreading misinformation about their CBD products. So, make sure to check the ingredients, as well as making sure that you’re not buying something that contains THC. You’ll also want to make sure that you’re buying a product with a high-concentration of CBD to actually receive any benefits. We recommend never buying a skincare or beauty product with less than 1% CBD concentration.

6. What about hemp oil beauty products?

Short answer: Hemp oil skincare and beauty products do not contain any CBD!

Long answer: It seems the CBD world is a bit of a terminological minefield! So, let us explain! CBD oil comes from the leaves, stems and flowers of the hemp plant. However, hemp oil comes from the seeds of the plant – which do not contain CBD. So, if you’re buying a product that advertises ‘hemp oil’ this will not naturally have any cannabidiol in it. Of course, hemp oil can still have some benefits for your skin and hair, however you won’t get all of the benefits that come from CBD unless you buy a product that specifically advertises it as such. So, always remember to check the exact ingredients!

7. Are there any side-effects?

Short answer: No! Using CBD oil in skincare usually does not have negative side-effects.

long answer: As with any skincare or beauty product, there is a very small risk of an allergic or adverse reaction to any of the ingredients included. However, this risk is very low. The overwhelming majority of people who use CBD skincare products have not reported any unpleasant side-effects. To avoid any unwanted surprises, always test any skincare or beauty products you buy on a small patch of skin first!

8. What types of CBD skincare products can I buy?

Short answer: CBD balms, creams, serums, exfoliants and body oils!

Long answer: Using CBD oil in skincare has become more and more common – with the global value of the CBD skincare market currently sitting at a massive  $234.1 million. This means that there are almost as many CBD skincare products on the market as there are ordinary skincare ones. These include CBD balms, exfoliants, serums, creams and body oils among many others!

Happy CBD shopping!

As always, it’s important to stay informed when buying any kind of CBD product. So, you should always make sure to do your research:

  • Think about the skincare issue you’re trying to solve and make sure that it’s something that can be helped by CBD.
  • Make sure to research the other ingredients in the product to understand their benefits
  • Always research the company you’re purchasing from. Read reviews online and check that the company are willing to give product information freely. (At ULU, we have our products independently lab-tested so you can be confident of their purity and quality.)
  • Always make sure the product you’re buying contains 0% THC.
  • Be wary of lower-concentration products – yes, they’re often cheaper, but anything with less than 1% CBD concentration probably isn’t going to have many benefits.
