What is Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular Dystrophy (MD), is a group of diseases that cause the patient to lose muscle mass and become weak. The loss of muscle happens when there’s an inability to produce the necessary proteins that are needed to build healthy muscles. Moreover, sufferers are at risk of losing their ability to walk and often rely on a wheelchair during their life. Alongside progressive muscle loss, people who suffer from MD also report difficulty swallowing and breathing. Unfortunately, there is no cure for these diseases; however, there are therapies and medications that help the patient manage symptoms and slow the disease down.

Causes and Risk Factors

Muscular Dystrophy disorders are inherited and passed down through families through their genes. In fact, researchers have identified more than thrifty genes cause the different types of muscular dystrophies; a medical professional will use a gene test to diagnose patients. Although they have similarities, each disorder will vary, with differing degrees of muscle loss, the age of onset and the speed the disease goes through the body.

Despite many forms of MD becoming apparent in childhood, some may not appear until later in life. The most common type in children is called Duchenne muscular dystrophy and myotonic MD in adults.

The types of muscular dystrophy include:

  • Becker MD
  • Duchenne MD
  • Emery-Dreifuss MD
  • Facioscapulohumeral MD
  • Limb-girdle MD
  • Myotonia Congenita
  • Myotonic Dystrophy

There are three main types of inheritance that cause muscular dystrophy to transfer to children:

X-linked recessive: This includes Duchenne/Becker and Emery-Dreifuss. The female usually carries these genes on one of the X chromosomes that determines the sex of a child. While the mothers will not show signs of the disease, a son of a carrier will have an approximately fifty percent chance of developing the disorder. If a man has X-linked dystrophy, his daughters will be carriers. However, if he isn’t affected, he cannot pass on MD. Moreover, while the daughter cannot develop the disease, she will have a fifty percent chance of being a carrier.

Autosomal recessive: This includes Limb-girdle type 2 MD and distal myopathy. Both parents must be carrying the faulty gene to pass it on. While the parents won’t show symptoms, the children will have a twenty-five percent chance of developing the disease.

Autosomal dominant: This includes, myotonic dystrophy, facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, and oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy. With this type of faulty gene, the severity of the disease can vary significantly between cases. As it’s dominant, only one defective gene needs to be present, and the person will be affected. Therefore, any child from an affected parent will have a fifty percent chance of developing muscular dystrophy.

What are the Symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy?

As there are different types of muscular dystrophy, the symptoms can vary considerably. Nevertheless, some of the common symptoms include muscle pain, weakness, cramps, stiffness, insomnia, drowsiness, and difficulty breathing and swallowing. With such an array of symptoms, it is common for some patients to experience chronic pain caused by muscle cramps, spasms, stiffness and pressure. Alongside the physical pain and limitations, sufferers of MD are more likely to develop depression. Mental disorders sometimes occur because of the impact of the diagnosis and frustration of not being able to perform daily tasks. Discovering you have this disease and the possible severity can have implications for your mental health. Hence, why it’s essential to care for your mental wellbeing as well as your physical wellbeing.

The symptoms of muscular dystrophy can also interfere with functions such as motor control, balance, expressing emotions, thinking, and breathing.

The Endocannabinoid System and Muscular Dystrophy

Every person has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which creates and uses cannabinoids to regulate and balance your bodily functions. Specifically, the ECS is a complex cell-signalling system in your body that is responsible for handling memory, mood, sleep, appetite, immune function and repair and restoration. You may be aware that the cannabis plant contains cannabinoids, but so do our bodies. Additionally, the ECS has CB1 and CB2 receptors which are activated by the cannabinoids in our bodies (endocannabinoids) and plants (phytocannabinoids). When these receptors are activated, they regulate these bodily functions.

So, how does the endocannabinoid system affect muscular dystrophy? The ECS is in charge of managing the systems and tissue that MD affects. So, when the muscle stiffens and spasm, the ECS manages the pain signals and inflammation. The way it does this is by emitting anandamide from the receptors in your brain and muscles when something hurts. In the same way, the anandamide will manage your response to pain and inflammation and will reduce your perception of it. Additionally, the cannabinoid receptors assist the regulation of cognition, immune function, and the nervous system. In fact, when the tissue gets damaged, your ECS will release endocannabinoids to protect and repair your body.

Muscular Dystrophy Treatment

As there is no cure for MD, it is imperative to manage the symptoms associated with it. Firstly, there are physical therapies available, but while they alleviate some of the pain, harsher medications are often required. The same goes for heat application and exercise. Accordingly, sufferers of MD get prescribed a group of medicines called opiates. These opiate-based medications commonly treat chronic pain and have been effective at reducing discomfort. Unfortunately, the treatment comes with an extensive list of side effects including drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, itching, difficulty urinating, constipation, dizziness and more. Further to this, there is also the risk of addiction. Alongside, these severe side effects, people who take opiate-based medications tend to build up a tolerance to them quickly. Consequently, a higher tolerance means a greater dosage is required to manage the pain.

How Can Amino CBD Supplements Help Symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy?

cbd and amino

The addition of Amino CBD supplements may help the symptoms of muscular dystrophy. In fact, CBD has a vital role to play in the ECS. When you add extra CBD, it gives your ECS a healthy boost – enhancing its ability to balance your bodily functions. However, CBD does more than this as it also helps retain the anandamide. To recall, this is what manages your pain and inflammation response. When your ECS is working it usually uses a fatty acid called FAAH to break down the anandamide. However, people who suffer from MD will benefit from higher levels of this because of their painful symptoms. When you take extra CBD, it will block FAAH and allow your body to retain more anandamide.

What are the primary muscular dystrophy symptoms that CBD and anandamide will alleviate?:

Pain: CBD is a natural painkiller. When it interacts with the ECS, it helps the anandamide regulate your pain response. People with MD often experience chronic pain by muscle spasms, twitches and cramps. The addition of CBD will lower your perception of this pain.

Inflammation: Inflammation occurs when your immune system sends immune cells to a damaged area of the body. Due to the anti and anandamide, it will control the number of immune cells going to the damaged tissue. Control over immune cells is crucial as too much inflammation can further damage your muscles, causing more pain.

Mood: Mental health issues are a significant concern in MD patients. Consequently, CBD is an excellent option for this because it attaches to your serotonin receptors, helping to boost your mood.

On the whole, CBD can be used to control inflammation and as natural pain relief. Some people choose to supplement their medications with CBD, while others replace it altogether. We advise talking to your doctor before making any changes to your current wellness plan.

Patient Case Study

Clayton Holton was born with muscular dystrophy, and it ruled his life. In a video describing his situation, he explained how the traditional pain medications made him feel as if he didn’t have ‘control over his thoughts’ and it made daily tasks even harder. Since using cannabis, he described feeling more in control of himself. What’s more, Holton also gained 8 pounds in 2 months, which is unique for people with muscular dystrophy. Sadly, Holton passed away in 2015, but he attributed the use of cannabis to extending his life expectancy and enhancing his quality of life.

You can listen to more of Clayton Holton’s story here.

We hope you have gained a more in-depth insight into how people with MD can use amino CBD oil for muscular relief.
