What are amino acids?
Amino acids are organic compounds that form proteins in the body. And even a GCSE biology lesson will tell you: ‘Amino acids are the building blocks of life.’
Amino Acids build muscles, tissues and cells and also play a significant role in almost every physiological process. They also help the body to produce essential forms of protein – creating essential nutrients for humans to stay alive and remain healthy.
Apart from functioning as a building block, amino acids also help keep organs functioning properly as well as keeping tendons, muscles, bones, skin, and hair healthy. The acids also help to remove the waste by-products of metabolism.
Amino acids fall into three distinct groups:
- Essential amino acids
- Nonessential amino acids
- Conditional amino acids
There are 9 essential aminos, 6 non-essential, and 5 conditional.

Amino acids come with a wide variety of benefits to keep your body functioning properly. And whilst each amino acid has different benefits for the body, here are some of the main benefits:
Sports and fitness – As amino acids help your body to make protein, they are beneficial for building muscle, decreasing muscle recovery time, increasing exercise endurance, and decreasing muscle soreness and fatigue.

The amino acid pool
Your amino acid pool refers to the total amount of free amino acids available in your body. Essentially, the amino acid pool in the human body influences a process called biosynthesis. This means that it breaks down amino acid from food and restructures it into new forms of protein.
You’ll want to keep your amino acid pool sufficiently topped up so that your body stays fit and healthy! However, if the amino acid pool in your body drops too low, you’ll become deficient.
Amino acid deficiency
Your body can become deficient in all of the 20 different types of amino acids. And this can happen as a result of poor diet, bad lifestyle habits such as drinking too much alcohol, or even environmental factors such as pollution and smoke-inhalation.
When this happens, your health can suffer. In fact, amino acid deficiency is harmful to the nervous, immune, digestive, and reproductive systems of the human body.
If your body’s supply of any of the amino acids gets too low, then your production of protein decreases. And this negatively impacts your metabolism. This can also lead to serious health issues, like hair loss, weight increase, sleep disruption, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular imbalance, among others.
