In this article we’ll frirst talk a bit about amino acids, what they are and why they’re so important for maintaining a healthy body and lifestyle. Then, we’ll introduce our ULU CBD amino acid supplements range!

This article covers all of the topics below. Click on each bullet point to skip to the relevant section.

What are amino acids?

Amino acids are organic compounds that form proteins in the body. And even a GCSE biology lesson will tell you: ‘Amino acids are the building blocks of life.’

Amino Acids build muscles, tissues and cells and also play a significant role in almost every physiological process. They also help the body to produce essential forms of protein – creating essential nutrients for humans to stay alive and remain healthy.

Apart from functioning as a building block, amino acids also help keep organs functioning properly as well as keeping tendons, muscles, bones, skin, and hair healthy. The acids also help to remove the waste by-products of metabolism.

Amino acids fall into three distinct groups:

  • Essential amino acids
  • Nonessential amino acids
  • Conditional amino acids

There are 9 essential aminos, 6 non-essential, and 5 conditional.

Amino acids benefits

Amino acids come with a wide variety of benefits to keep your body functioning properly. And whilst each amino acid has different benefits for the body, here are some of the main benefits:

Sports and fitness – As amino acids help your body to make protein, they are beneficial for building muscle, decreasing muscle recovery time, increasing exercise endurance, and decreasing muscle soreness and fatigue.

Hair – Up to 90% of your hair is made up of keratin – a protein formed by 18 out of 20 amino acids. Keeping particularly your cysteine and glycine amino acids at a healthy level can promote hair growth as well as improving overall hair health and appearance.

Skin – Amino acids help your skin to stay hydrated and healthy, helping the body to move moisture to the skin. Most crucially, arginine plays a role in repairing skin damage, histidine is an antioxidant with soothing properties, and lysine helps visibly smooth the skin’s surface.

Brain and mental health – Amino acids, particularly tryptophan, valine help promote mental alertness, as well as boosting mood and combatting anxiety, mood and stress disorders. Phenylalanine also helps your brain to complete vital functions.

Immune system function – Histidine and Isoleucine are among the amino acids that help your immune system to function properly. And they are both amino acids which particularly older people are likely to become deficient in.

The amino acid pool

Your amino acid pool refers to the total amount of free amino acids available in your body. Essentially, the amino acid pool in the human body influences a process called biosynthesis. This means that it breaks down amino acid from food and restructures it into new forms of protein.

You’ll want to keep your amino acid pool sufficiently topped up so that your body stays fit and healthy! However, if the amino acid pool in your body drops too low, you’ll become deficient.

Amino acid deficiency

Your body can become deficient in all of the 20 different types of amino acids. And this can happen as a result of poor diet, bad lifestyle habits such as drinking too much alcohol, or even environmental factors such as pollution and smoke-inhalation.

When this happens, your health can suffer. In fact, amino acid deficiency is harmful to the nervous, immune, digestive, and reproductive systems of the human body.

If your body’s supply of any of the amino acids gets too low, then your production of protein decreases. And this negatively impacts your metabolism. This can also lead to serious health issues, like hair loss, weight increase, sleep disruption, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular imbalance, among others.

Amino acid supplements

Many of conditional and non-essential aminos, you can gain from a healthy diet in amino-rich foods or by taking supplements. However, the 9 essential amino acids cannot be made by the body. So, in this case, you’ll need to take amino acid supplements to boost your body’s intake of essential aminos.

Amino acid supplements come in different forms – including powder, oil or capsule. And when it comes to the best amino acid supplements, this really comes down to your own preference. So, it’s important to find an amino supplement that works for you, and that blends into your daily routine.

CBD and amino acids

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the hemp plant. And when taken as full-spectrum CBD, cannabidiol itself contains many amino acids. In fact, the hemp plant contains all 20 amino acids.

CBD is also able to have a wide variety of benefits because of how it boosts your body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signalling system found naturally within your body. It’s responsible for regulating a variety of functions including:

  • Memory
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Sleep
  • Immune function
  • Repair and restoration

And as you may have noticed, all of these benefits of CBD are also benefits of amino acids. Therefore, taking CBD and amino acids together effectively helps to give your body a super-boost. Cannabidiol and amino acids complement each other to support increased health and wellbeing.
