What is vaping?

The subject of vaping has become a hot discussion topic in the media in recent months. And most people know that vaping was initially introduced as means of curbing smoking habits. It is very well known that smoking nicotine or inhaling nicotine is very bad for the lungs and our health, leading to an increased risk of serious health issues.

So, what is vaping? Well, when you are vaping, an oil is being passed over a heated element to increase its temperature. This is then turned into a vapour which you inhale into your lungs.  The main principle here is that the vape liquid never burns, and so you are avoiding combustion of the oil altogether.

As vape products are still relatively new, we are still learning much about them. In fact, recent studies surrounding vaping have pointed to some interesting results. For example, Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians recently estimated that nicotine vapes are at least 95% safer that classical cigarette smoking.

What is a CBD oil vape pen?

The most recent development for vape liquid has been the introduction cannabidiol vapes. These are vape pens which involve the inhalation of CBD oil (sometimes called CBD vape juice.) Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the hemp plant with many reported health benefits for UK users – we’ve even written an article about CBD benefits if you want to know more about this!

Note: Be wary of ‘hemp oil’ vapes in the UK. Whilst, as the name suggests, these also come from hemp, they do not typically contain any CBD. This is because CBD oil comes from the leaves and stems of the hemp plant, whereas hemp oil comes from the seeds, which do not contain any cannabidiol.

What are the benefits of vaping CBD oil?

There are a variety of benefits of vaping CBD oil for users who care to try! And this is because of the way that CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS.) The ECS is an important cell-signalling system within our bodies that is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, and keeping our bodies functioning properly. And taking cannabidiol effectively acts as a boost to your ECS Find out more about the ECS and why it matters.

When inhaled in significant quantities, CBD vape juice provides a mild calming effect. When taken over a long-term basis, it also has benefits for:

  • Sleep
  • Appetite
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Mood
  • Reduced inflammation and support for inflammatory conditions
  • Heart and brain health
  • Immune system function

And the major advantages of CBD oil vape pens is that they are completely legal in the UK. This is because CBD is a non-rewarding substance, so it does not cause users to feel high or intoxicated. The WHO have also reported that CBD does not show any signs of dependency or overdosing risks in users.

Is vaping safe?

Whilst there are benefits of vaping CBD oil, it’s also important to consider the safety of vaping. And although the risks of vaping are far lower than cigarettes, all forms of excessive vaping will create some risk of problems with the lungs. This is because the thinning agent used in CBD oils like PG (propylene glycol), can break down into carcinogens even when heated at low temperatures as with the ceramic coil vape pen. There is also some evidence that vaping can cause problems with reported pneumonia, in which the fatty globules of oil build up in the airways.

Any newspaper or online report about vaping is also likely to mention the recent spate of deaths and injuries to the lungs of vapers in the United States. However, this has ultimately been linked to the poor quality of carrier oil used within US vapes. In addition, the majority of these cases were linked to cannabis and nicotine vaping – not CBD use. Therefore it is very important that any CBD e liquid that you choose to vape is not created by using vitamin E oil carrier oil.

CDC and FDA EVALI report

In February 2020, the CDC and FDA produced a report concerning the risks of EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury) in vape users.

The full results of the February 2020 CDC and FDA report in the USA can be found here. But the principle summary of their findings was as follows:

  • National and state data from patient reports and product sample testing show tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products, particularly from informal sources like friends, family, or in-person or online dealers, are linked to most EVALI  cases and play a major role in the outbreak
  • Vitamin E acetate is strongly linked to the EVALI outbreak. Vitamin E acetate has been found in product samples tested by FDA and state laboratories and in patient lung fluid samples tested by CDC from geographically diverse states.
  • Evidence is not sufficient to rule out the contribution of other chemicals of concern, including chemicals in either THC or non-THC products, in some of the reported EVALI cases.

Are cannabidiol vapes safe?

Of course, excessive use of vaping will carry some of the above risks, mainly in long-term, heavy users. However, many users of CBD vape juice and e-liquids find that the instantaneous feeling of relaxation and relief they get from vaping means that there is far less need to have a continual habit of puffing and inhaling on their vape pen. So, in this case, the benefits of vaping CBD oil are greater than the risks.

However, to avoid any significant risks, we don’t recommend taking up CBD vaping if you aren’t already a regular vaper. Instead, non-vapers should try one of the other methods of CBD usage and application.

Do Vape pens pose a fire risk?

There have also been some reported instances noted of e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire.

To manage fire risk:

  • Always use the correct charger for the device
  • Do not leave your e-cigarette charging unattended, especially overnight
  • Do not carry an e-cigarette in your pocket next to coins or keys
  • Always buy your e-cigarette products from a reputable retailer to make sure they are compliant with UK safety regulations

Does e-cigarette vapour cause harm to others?

There is no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. This is in contrast to smoking, where exposure to secondhand smoke is known to be very harmful to the health of others.

This is because unlike cigarettes, there is no side-stream vapour released by a vape pen into the atmosphere, just the exhaled aerosol. Also, unlike tobacco smoke, vape pen vapour dissipates quickly in the atmosphere.

Public Health England’s 2018 independent evidence review found that to date, there have been no identified health risks of passive vaping to bystanders.

The two main types of e-liquid

In the UK, there are two main types of vape liquids: those made with propylene glycol, and those made with vegetable glycerin. And in fact, some e-liquids contain a mixture of both. Each one has slightly different properties, and the type of vape you choose really comes down to a matter of preference. And in fact, many people combine both liquids in their vapes to tailor a unique vaping experience, exactly to their preferences.

So, let’s briefly go over how propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine work within vapes, and what their key differences are:

PG or Propylene glycol

Propylene Glycol (PG) is a clear, colourless, odourless and tasteless fluid obtained from petrochemical sources. It’s also one of the most versatile substances ever created, with uses in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. And ever since electronic cigarettes first hit the market, propylene glycol has been the main ingredient for e liquids.

The main reason it serves as the base of cbd vape oil is that it produces vapour when heated. This substance is a colourless and odourless liquid with a sweet taste. It has the ability to keep things moist, and it provides a slightly harsher ‘throat hit’ than vegetable glycerine, which means it provides an experience similar to smoking a cigarette. This is really important, especially for those who are quitting tobacco use and transitioning to vaping, as it enables a similar, yet much less harmful sensation.

Vegetable glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is another ingredient used within some vapes. It is a natural product made from vegetable oil, frequently rapeseed, palm or coconut oil. These oils are split into raw fats under the combined activity of pressure, temperature and water. Temperatures frequently exceed 200 degrees Celsius and the oils are kept under pressure for 20 minutes to half an hour. Glycerol is then absorbed by the water from the fatty acid stage of the oils. Subsequently the glycerol distilled is isolated, creating a normal 99% pure glycerin product. Food-level vegetable glycerin is 99.7% pure, with the remaining 0.3% being water.

Many people prefer vegetable glycerin vapes as they provide a smoother throat hit. They also tend to be thicker liquids, producing much larger clouds – part of the fun for many vapers.

What is a cannabidiol vape pen?

A vape pen is the device that is going to heat up your e-liquid or CBD vape juice and turn it into a vapour which you can then inhale.

A CBD oil vape pen typically contains rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power a heating element or coil which heats the CBD vape juice or e liquid and turns it into vapour. High-quality vape pens will utilise a ceramic element to heat the oil. As this ensures that there is no burning of the oil or other substances (for example early CBD vape pens used a cotton wick).

Cannabidiol vape pens come in two main varieties: disposable and refillable.

Refillable or disposable CBD oil vape pens

There are a variety of different CBD oil vape pens available to buy in the UK. And the first distinction you’ll need to choose between is a disposable device and a refillable device. Of course, there are some pros and cons that go along with each type. So, now let’s take a look at the difference between the two, as well as their benefits and drawbacks.

What is a refillable vape pen?

A refillable CBD oil vape pen is any type of vape pen that can be filled with CBD e-liquid. It usually has a tank attached to a rechargeable battery, so it can be used multiple times and refilled once the e-liquid runs out. As the name suggests, these cannabidiol vapes are shaped like a pen, and are generally smaller and lighter than the average mod and tank combo. Some of them are suitable for direct lung vaping while others provide a tight mouth to lung draw.

Refillable pod vapes are another option in this category. Although they are designed for vaping nicotine, and not exactly pen-shaped. These mini vapes can be used to vape CBD as well since they are also discreet and easy to use.

Pros and cons of refillable vape oil pens

Refillable CBD oil vape pens require the purchase of a vape device, and obviously some CBD vape juice to fill it with. These devices can come with a heftier price tag than disposables as they are designed to last much longer. Another downside to refillable CBD pens is that they’re less convenient, discreet, and require more knowledge to use properly.

However, many users prefer to use a refillable CBD oil vape pen, as there are more options to achieve a custom vape. Most of them even have adjustable power and airflow options for fine-tuning the experience, depending on whether you prefer a DTL (direct to lung vape) with bigger clouds or a tighter cigarette-style draw. And one of the main benefits of vaping CBD oil in a refillable pen is that it is generally more cost-effective. This is because after the initial investment, a refillable CBD oil vape pen can be re-used many times.

DTL (direct to lung) devices are ideal for lower CBD strengths since they deliver more vapour per puff. On the other hand, MTL (mouth to Lung) is best suited for higher amounts of CBD, since it takes more puffs to achieve the same desired effect. You should bear in mind that the choice of vaping style is very individual, and depends on the amount of vapour you wish to generate.

Pros

  • More cost effective
  • Adjustable set up options for temperature and airflow
  • Efficient delivery method
  • Caters to different vaping styles
  • Larger vape cloud
  • Multiple style , from pens to larger devices
  • More eco-friendly as they are used multiple times

Cons

  • Initial investment to obtain the equipment
  • Some training required to use properly
  • Requires maintenance if performance is to be optimised
  • Not as discreet

What is a disposable CBD vape oil pen ?

Disposable CBD vape oil pens are vape devices that contain a battery, atomiser and are pre filled with cannabidiol vape juice. They generally resemble a tube, some so small that they resemble a cigarette, and are sometimes referred to as cigarette-style vape pens. Disposables are designed to provide usually a few hundred inhalations before they are empty and are then thrown away.

Disposable cannabidiol vapes are another practical alternative to CBD cartridges and CBD pods, since they do not require the investment of purchasing a battery or compatible pod system. They are typically draw activated, which means they only produce vapour when you take a breath, drawing air through the device.

Pros and cons of disposable CBD vape oil pens

Disposable CBD vape oil pens are one of the most practical ways to start vaping cannabidiol, especially for first time users.  They’re also relatively inexpensive and are incredibly easy to use. As they they are pre filled, disposable CBD pens do not require you to purchase CBD vape juice or any additional items. Simply vape and go!

However, they generally don’t offer as much variety in terms of flavours and CBD concentration levels. They are also generally not as cost effective as refillable vape pens if you consider the amount of CBD vape oil they contain compared with the price. Another drawback is that they are limited to a cigarette style draw, a style of vaping also called mouth to lung. This style of delivery combined with the low output means that you may need to vape it more often to achieve your desired CBD dosage.

Pros

  • Convenient
  • No maintenance or preparation required
  • Small and compact and easy to carry
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Less cost effective than refillable devices
  • More limited selection
  • No direct lung options
  • Non-adjustable (power/airflow)
  • Difficult to recycle

CBD Vape juice

So, now you understand the different components of e-liquid, as well as the different varieties of vape pens, you’ll need to think about CBD vape juice.

One of the reasons that CBD vape juice has proven so popular is because the the absorption of the CBD is almost instant. After vaping the e liquid , the user will feel the benefits of the cannabidiol taking effect throughout the body.

Is there a difference between CBD e-juice and e-liquid ?

You will often see different terms for CBD vape oil. It’s sometimes called e-liquid, e-juice, vape oil, or even CBD vape juice. In reality, these are all the same things: a vape liquid that contains cannabidiol. They’ll all behave and be used in exactly the same manner.

How to choose the best CBD oil vape pen

Next, it’s important to choose the best CBD vape oil for you. There are hundreds of different product varieties and retailers on the UK market. So, it’s important to do your research and understand what you’re looking for. And of course, choosing the best CBD oil vape for you often comes down to a matter of preference.

However, there are a few key things to look out for:

1. High-quality carrier oil

The first thing you need to check is the carrier oil that is being used to create the vapour. Due to the risks we discussed earlier, you should always avoid any product that is made using vitamin E. High-quality cannabidiol vape oil will be made with propylene glycol (80%) vegetable glycerine (20%) plus cannabidiol (CBD).

2. Choose your CBD vape juice strength

The next step is to decide the strength of cannabidiol vape liquid you wish vape. You should bear in mind that although there are many benefits of vaping CBD oil, you’ll need to vape it in a high enough concentration over a long-term basis to have any real effect.

At ULU we prefer to have a higher level of CBD and use a potent 5% concentration. When buying a CBD oil vape pen in the UK, you’ll certainly find some products for a cheap budget that claim outlandish benefits. However, in reality you will find that these cheaper products have only negligible levels of cannabidiol. And in this case, all you’re really doing is vaping oil with no benefit from the CBD.

For some users this may be sufficient, however if you’re looking to achieve all the great benefits that come from high-strength cannabidiol vapes, you should always make sure to check the concentration levels. You should also compare the overall price of the product with the amount of cannabidiol you’re actually getting per use. We’re not confident that anything less than a 5% CBD level will have any major benefits.

3. Only buy THC-free cannabidiol vapes

At the same time, it’s absolutely essential that you only buy from retailers who guarantee 0% THC cannabidiol vapes. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive chemical compound in marijuana that gets you high. It’s also illegal in the UK. Remember, you will be held liable for breaking the law, even if you were mis-sold an illegal product by a UK retailer.

Always make sure to buy from retailers who have their products tested by third-party labs to verify concentration levels and 0% THC. You can find our ULU lab reports here!

4. Avoid nicotine

Here at ULU, we’re passionate about health and wellbeing. So, we recommend avoiding nicotine to keep yourself safe from any health risks. However, you should also avoid nicotine in your CBD oil vape pen because it’s an additive that will reduce the benefits of using a cannabidiol vape.

CBD vape juice is designed to relax, destress and help your body to heal – all of which is made counter-productive by the addition of nicotine!

5. Choose your flavour

The final step to choosing the best CBD vape oil for you is to choose a flavour.  There are many available across the UK, but here at ULU, we’ve used extensive research to choose the UK’s 6 most popular cannabidiol vape oil flavours.

Why not browse our collection of CBD vape flavours?

Where can you buy CBD oil vape pens in the UK ?

There are a few options for buying a CBD oil vape pen in the UK. And again, each come with pros and cons. So, let’s take a look at the options.

Buy cannabidiol vapes in-store

Many cannabidiol vapes are now available in a variety of brick-and-mortar shops. You can find CBD offers in large national retail chains, specialist vaping shops, and petrol stations. However, some of the products sold in these shops are not properly vetted for quality and reputability. Plus, if you’re buying from a more general shop, there may not be a dedicated CBD expert on-hand to give advice. And if this is the case, you could be persuaded to spend money on a low-quality product that you might not know how to use.

Buy cannabidiol vapes online

And of course, when buying CBD oil vape pens in the UK you can also buy online. During the Covid-19 crisis and the need to social distance, many people have turned to on-line shopping, and this is true as well for CBD products. However, you’ll also need to do plenty of research to find a reputable retailer.

A reputable seller will always have:

  • A professional website with advanced security certificates
  • A wide product range along with product and CBD usage information
  • Clear concentration levels of CBD per product and per use
  • Guarantees that products contain less than 0.00% THC
  • Independent lab reports to verify concentration levels and purity
  • Positive reviews not just on their site, but on a variety of third-party review sites

Are CBD Vapes Addictive? Your CBD Vaping Questions Answered

Today we’re answering all of your questions about CBD vapes, vape oils and vaping. Some of the most common questions we get are things like: ‘Are CBD vapes addictive?’ and ‘What can vaping CBD be used for?’ So, read on for everything you’ve always wanted to know about CBD vaping.

What is CBD vape oil?

CBD vape oil, sometimes called CBD vape juice, is a vape product which contains cannabidiol – the naturally occurring chemical compound found in hemp plants. (Not to be confused with hemp oil, which comes from hemp seeds and does not contain any CBD.) CBD vape oils and CBD vape juices are designed to be inhaled with a compatible e-cigarette device. They also come in a variety of interesting flavours. Honestly, you can find any flavour imaginable on the UK CBD vape juice market, from blueberry to cheesecake!

Are CBD vapes addictive?

Are CBD vapes addictive’ is one of the most common questions surrounding CBD vaping. And the answer is a resounding ‘no!’ At a molecular level, CBD is not addictive. It’s also worth noting that in the UK, CBD vapes do not contain nicotine. So, there is nothing added into the CBD vape juice that will cause users to become addicted.

In fact, CBD vape oil has been shown to reduce the effects of addiction. A recent study found that vaping CBD reduced cigarette craving and consumption in smokers.

Will vaping CBD get me high?

This is another common misconception about CBD vaping in the UK. However, CBD vapes (as well as all CBD products) do not create a ‘high’ – as cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive substance.

To understand this, you need to know a little bit about the cannabis family tree (shown below.) CBD comes from the hemp plant, which is a non-psychoactive plant, meaning it does not contain anything which causes a high. The hemp plant is just one type of plant within the cannabis family. Marijuana is another type of plant within the cannabis family, however it is very different to hemp. Marijuana contains a chemical called THC, which causes its trademark high. However, hemp does not contain this chemical

So, whilst THC and marijuana products cause a high, CBD and hemp products do not.

In the UK, it’s illegal for any CBD product to contain more than 0.2% THC. So, as long as you’re buying your CBD vape oil from a reputable UK company, there will be no risk of becoming high.

How much CBD should I vape?

Recommended CBD vape dosage very much depends on the individual. How much CBD you should vape will vary based on your height, weight and the effect  you want to achieve. And as with all CBD products, CBD vape dosage can take a little bit of time to get right.

As CBD vape juice is able to enter quickly and efficiently into the body due to inhalation, it produces a calming relaxation effect fairly quickly. So, if short-term relief of stress is your goal, a few puffs when you need it most should do the trick. However, if you’re vaping CBD oil for something like chronic pain, you’ll need a substantial regular dose over a long-term period to receive the benefits you’re looking for.

We recommend starting small with a few puffs spread evenly over 2-3 times a day. Try this for a few weeks and if you’re still not noticing much of a difference, gradually increase the dose.

What does CBD vape oil do?

‘What does CBD vape oil do?’ is another common CBD vaping question in the UK. And this can be explained by introducing you to the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

The ECS is a cell-signalling system found within our bodies that helps with homeostasis – maintaining biological balance that allows us to function properly. The ECS is responsible for helping to regulate things like sleep, mood, immune function, and memory, among many other areas. And the ECS receptors act kind of like a lock, waiting to be opened. But where’s the key? The key comes in the form of chemicals called ‘cannabinoids.’ Now, some cannabinoids are produced naturally by the body, and some can be supplemented. CBD is just one of the many hundreds of types of cannabinoids.

So, when you consume CBD such as via a CBD vape, CBD enters our bodies and acts effectively like a boost to the Endocannabinoid System. And This is why CBD is able to have such a wide variety of benefits!

What can CBD vapes be used for?

Because of the way CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System, vaping CBD is able to provide a number of different benefits.

Vaping CBD can provide short-term relief of symptoms of stress and anxiety. However, there is also evidence to suggest that ingesting CBD can reduce these symptoms on a longer-term basis. One study showed that CBD was able to change the way the brain responded to stressful stimuli in its participants.

Vaping CBD also has a number of physical health benefits. Cannabidiol itself is a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory. Which makes CBD vapes great for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, IBS, and some autoimmune conditions. Studies have also shown that CBD can lessen chronic pain, and can also help to prevent seizures.

A graphic depicting the human body and the main autoimmune conditions

What does vaping CBD feel like?

If you’re familiar with vaping, then vaping CBD won’t feel very different to what you’ve already experienced. Due to the fact that CBD is able to quickly enter the body when vaped, some users report an instant feeling of calm or relaxation. However, this is very mild – there is no feeling of euphoria and it does not cause users to feel high.

However, if you’ve never vaped CBD before, it’s simply the inhalation of vapour. Many people think that vaping will feel like inhaling smoke, but this isn’t the case! Vapour is much thinner than smoke, and is much more pleasant to inhale. And if you choose a flavoured CBD vape oil or CBD vape juice, then the experience is even more enjoyable.
