The Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil

Let’s be honest. The CBD world can be a bit of a terminology minefield. Even a quick Google search brings up all sorts of terms related to hemp and CBD – ‘hemp’ ‘hemp oil’ ‘hempseed oil’ ‘hemp CBD’. If you don’t know the difference, it can all be a bit confusing! And if you’re looking to buy a CBD or a hemp product, you’ll need to know the difference. So, in this post you’ll learn all about the difference between CBD, hemp and hemp oil!

Is hemp CBD?

The short answer is no. CBD is not hemp. However, it does come from hemp. In fact, CBD comes from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the hemp plant. CBD stands for ‘cannabidiol.’ It’s a naturally occurring chemical compound found in only the leaves, flowers and stalks of the hemp plant.

Is CBD oil the same as hemp oil?

Also, no. CBD and hemp oil are very different. Hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant, whereas CBD oil comes from its leaves, stalks and flowers. These are the only parts of the hemp plant where CBD is found. This means that hemp seeds do not contain any CBD, and neither does UK hemp oil.

What about hempseed oil?

In the UK, hempseed oil is just another name for hemp oil. As the name suggests, hempseed oil is made from the seeds of the hemp plant. Therefore, hempseed oils also do not contain any CBD.

So, what are the benefits of CBD oil vs hemp oil?

In addition to coming from different parts of the hemp plant, CBD oil and hemp oil have some other important differences! In fact, they both have entirely different uses and benefits.

CBD acts as a boost to your endocannabinoid system (ECS.) The ECS is a cell-signalling system within our bodies that regulates areas such as sleep, mood, memory and fertility among many others! It also directly affects inflammation and associated inflammatory conditions like joint inflammation, arthritis and skin rashes.

CBD effectively boosts your ECS. And this is why the benefits of CBD are so widespread. It’s also why many people are able to use CBD for things like:

  • Pain relief
  • Insomnia
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Inflammation

In fact, a study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research 2018 showed that 62 percent of cannabidiol users declared that they use CBD to treat a medical condition. The top three conditions were pain, anxiety and depression.

However, as hemp oil (otherwise known as hempseed oil) contains almost 0% CBD, it does not benefit the endocannabinoid system. And this means it doesn’t come with all of the benefits of products which contain CBD.

Are there any benefits of hempseed oil?

Hemp oil has been shown to have a number of health benefits, though much different to those of CBD oil.

Hemp seeds are a great source of Omega-6 (found in vegetable oils) and Omega-3 (commonly found in oily fish.) These are known as essential fatty acids. They are also a good source of protein and vitamin E, as well as containing other plant-sourced minerals, such as phosphorus, calcium, iron, sodium, magnesium, sulphur, potassium and zinc.

Studies have shown that due to hemp oil’s balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, when applied to the skin, it can reduce dryness and eczema. However, hemp oil does not have any proven effect on issues such as stress, anxiety or insomnia.

The tricky marketing tactics behind hemp oil

The CBD industry as a whole is relatively new to the UK. It seems that almost overnight there’s been an influx of new CBD companies and products – each with their own claims! It’s like a new country has been discovered – and the race is on to grab as much valuable land as possible. (By any means necessary!)

If you ask the average UK consumer, it’s doubtful that they would know the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil. Someone may hear about the benefits of CBD, hear that it comes from hemp, and visit the first hemp retailer that they come across.

And it seems many UK companies are capitalising on this confusion. Many hemp oil sellers rely on their customers not knowing the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil when it comes to making a sale! And when hemp oil doesn’t come cheap, you want to be sure you’re aware of what you’re buying.

How can you make sure you’re buying the right product for you?

Misinformation is everywhere when it comes to the CBD and hemp industry. And whilst many reputable companies are trying their best to clear up confusion, there are many more who only want to perpetuate it!

So, when deciding which product is right for you, it’s important to consider a few things:

Consider your reason for buying

What are you using the product for? What health benefits are you looking to receive? Hemp oil has many cosmetic uses, however if you’re looking for something with wider health and wellbeing benefits, you’ll want to purchase a CBD product.

Read the packaging carefully

If you’re looking for hemp oil, make sure it says this on the packaging. If you’re looking for a CBD product, make sure the packaging actually contains the word ‘CBD.’

Make sure the company is reputable

Is the company you’re buying from reputable? You should only ever buy from companies who have all of their products tested by third-party labs.  This is so you can verify that you’re buying exactly what it says on the packaging! And if any CBD or hemp company is difficult to get in contact with, or doesn’t want to give information freely, then this should be a major red flag!

Read user experiences and reviews

To determine whether a product will work, read case studies, reviews and user experiences. Of course, you should consider whether these are trustworthy if they come from a retailer website. However, you can use your best judgement for this!
