What Benefits Can Using CBD Have On Your Skin?
The wellness and beauty industry’s obsession with CBD is gathering momentum by the day. In 2018, we heard of its inclusion as a skincare ingredient and today, we can’t get enough of it. With a multitude of life changing properties, we take a look at the benefits of CBD on your skin.
What is CBD?
Let’s start by getting down to basics. The cannabis sativa plant has two main species – hemp and marijuana – and they contain a multitude of components, one of which is cannabidiol, also known as CBD.
In hemp, as opposed to marijuana, we find a much higher percentage of CBD and an extremely low level of THC which is responsible for the psychological ‘high’ associated with cannabis.
CBD is non-intoxicative and non-euphoric. It helps with relieving chronic pain, insomnia, auto-immune diseases, anxiety and depression, and linked to a multitude of skincare benefits.
You’ll find only the highest quality products in our ULU CBD skincare line and they are entirely free of THC.
What are the options for CBD products?
When it comes to skincare, whether you’re looking to combat the signs of ageing, nourish dry skin or reduce breakouts and redness, there are four ways to take CBD:
- Sublingual method: place CBD oil under your tongue and let it absorb, by-passing the digestive system
- Orally: ingest edibles or CBD capsules
- Topically: apply oil, serum or cream directly on to the skin
- Inhaling and CBD vape oil: Inhale the cannabidiol vapour using a compatible vaping device
Oil drops are a great way of introducing CBD to your daily life. While topical products such as balm, body oil or cream can become an invaluable element of your skincare routine.
In answer to the question, can CBD be absorbed through the skin? Most certainly, yes! While a CBD skin cream or CBD oil for skin applied topically won’t reach the bloodstream, it absorbs through the surface of the skin to interact with cannabinoid receptors.
What are the benefits of CBD on the skin?
With both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, there are many purported CBD skin care benefits. Let’s take a look at just a few of them.
Treating eczema and psoriasis
The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD make it a winning ingredient when it comes to treating eczema and psoriasis. CBD oil effects the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for regulating and balancing many processes in the body such immune response and communication between cells. In a study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science in 2007, researchers found that when they applied cannabinoids to human skin cells, they inhibited the over production of skin cells that are commonly seen in psoriasis.
Decelerating the visible signs of ageing
A successful antioxidant, CBD helps to counteract the damage caused by free radicals, visually diminishing fine lines and wrinkles and skin dullness. As an extra bonus, the Omega 6 and Omega 3 from hemp plants in CBD beauty products stimulate the production of collagen, preventing excessive water loss and keeping your skin hydrated.
A common skin condition caused by the build-up of dead skin cells, dirt and excess oil, acne effects nine out of ten adolescents and millions of adults all over the world. Its effects can be devastating but help is at hand from CBD. One of the most promising studies from The Journal of Clinical Investigation finds that, due to its combined lipostatic, antiproliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects, CBD has potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It inhibits excess sebum oil production and has anti-inflammatory properties on oil-producing glands. And, as CBD day and night cream can keep unwanted acne at bay, so CBD body oil can help to reduce body acne.
A powerful antioxidant, CBD in creams and body oils can reduce scar formation, boosting collagen to prevent scar tissue and reduce the appearance of existing scars.
Reducing redness and rosacea
The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD has proven to be useful in reducing redness and irritation.
Soothing sensitive and dry skin
CBD has a perfect balance of nutrients and substances to nourish and moisturise your skin, helping to stop peeling skin, rough patches, cuts and cracks. While normal moisturisers might inhibit your natural production of oil, CBD oil interacts with your skin glands to regulate the production of oil.Read more about Vicky’s experience with dry skin and CBD skincare here.
Are there any side effects?
CBD has no known side effects. A World Health Organisation report found no adverse health outcomes but rather several medical applications, concluding it to be safe and well tolerated in humans.
As with all products, it’s possible that a person could experience an allergic reaction to CBD when applied topically. But this is often more likely caused by other ingredients in the product, as opposed to the CBD.
ULU only create premium products that are medically tested and certified. We will never compromise on the quality of anything you put in to or on your body.
