What is CBD Cream?
What is CBD?
Before we focus on the properties and benefits of CBD creams, let’s take a look at the compound itself.
CBD is a naturally occurring chemical compound derived from cannabis, the plant that gives us marijuana and hemp. These compounds are called cannabinoids. Another cannabinoid found in cannabis is THC, the psychoactive chemical that creates the euphoric effect.
CBD is the non-psychoactive portion of the cannabis plant. At ULU, our CBD UK products come from the hemp plant which contains high levels of CBD and less than 0% THC.
Unlike THC, CBD is legal in the UK and it won’t get you high.
Products derived from CBD are used to create alternative health and food supplements, with numerous mental and physical benefits including pain relief, skin care and stress relief. While the industry is relatively new, studies are ongoing and positive and the popularity of CBD products is growing rapidly.
How can CBD help with skin care?
There are four main ways to take CBD:
- Topically – applying creams or balms directly on to the skin
- Sublingually – dropping oil under the tongue
- Orally – taking tablets, capsules or gummies
- Inhaling – vaping using a compatible vaping device
Research has shown that cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatory agents, exerting their effects through the induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, suppression of cytokine production and the induction of T-regulatory cells.
As an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant, CBD has numerous benefits relating to skincare, for which CBD creams and balms are the most popular choice. While a CBD skin cream or CBD oil for skin applied topically won’t reach the bloodstream, it can be absorbed though the surface of the skin to interact with cannabinoid receptors.
What skin conditions might CBD cream support?
When combined with quality creams and balms, CBD can provide both effective pain and cosmetic support.
CBD cream for cosmetic support
The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD make it a highly successful ingredient when it comes to dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. CBD oil effects the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for regulating and balancing many processes in the body such as immune response and communication between cells. In a 2007 study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science , researchers found that when they applied cannabinoids to human skin cells, they inhibited the over-production of skin cells that are commonly seen in psoriasis. CBD interacts with white blood cells that cause inflammation and also activates glycine receptors that alleviate the chronic pain associated with inflammation. These anti-inflammatory properties can also be useful in reducing the redness and irritation associated with rosacea. Meanwhile, the anti-oxidant properties of CBD may help skin infections caused by cracked skin associated with eczema.
Research shows that cannabidiol blocks neurotoxicity. As a successful antioxidant, CBD is reportedly effective in anti-ageing, counteracting the damage caused by free radicals, visually diminishing fine lines, wrinkles and skin dullness. Furthermore, the Omega 6 and Omega 3 from hemp plants in CBD creams stimulate the production of collagen, preventing excessive water loss and keeping your skin hydrated – an added bonus!
Finally, according to The Journal of Clinical Investigation, CBD is a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne, initiating excess sebum oil production and invoking its anti-inflammatory properties on oil-producing glands. Yet one more benefit for the use of CBD face and body creams.
CBD cream for pain relief
A 2016 study on rats discovered that, applied topically, CBD could help manage pain and inflammation (in this case, associated with arthritis). CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system that governs functions such as our ability to process pain, as well as inflammation, sleep and mood. Clinical studies have shown that it can help with pain-related medical conditions such as arthritis and neuropathy, as well as pain in patients receiving palliative care. This 2020 study showed that nearly 25% of outpatient palliative care patients in the US use CBD, most of those opting for topical application.
Many athletes also incorporate CBD muscle rubs into their daily routine, invigorating the senses and supporting muscle aches and pains.
How should I apply CBD cream?
Adopting a daily routine using CBD cream is likely to lead to the best results. Simply take a pea-sized amount of cream or balm and rub it in to the desired area. While you might find you need to apply more, it’s always a good idea to start off with a small amount and build up gradually.
As the CBD is so localised and specific, you don’t need to be concerned about dosage, but it is still a good idea to take time to work out how much you need. You might be surprised at how little you use.
