What is Delta-10-Tetrahydrocannabinol?

What is Tetrahydrocannabinol?

Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, is one of many chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. It’s the principal psychoactive compound of cannabis that produces the ‘high’ and is illegal in the UK.

What is Delta-10-Tetrahydrocannabinol?

Delta-9 THC is the cannabinoid we generally refer to when discussing THC in the UK. More recently, we’re learning about Delta-8, a less well-known naturally occurring compound that is reported to offer similar benefits but with a lower psychotropic potency than Delta-9.

And then comes the newest discovery… Delta-10-Tetrahydrocannabinol. Delta-10 is another cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It occurs in exceptionally small, trace quantities making it difficult to derive and generally completely synthesised in laboratories.

ULU CBD questions

What are the benefits of Delta-10-Tetrahydrocannabinol?

Like other cannabinoid compounds, Delta-10 interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in our body, playing a part in many elements of health including metabolism, mood, immune system responses and inflammation.

Delta-10 is reported to activate our ECS receptors in a similar way to Delta-9, reducing nausea, relieving pain and increasing appetite. Unlike Delta-9, however, Delta-10 has less potential to give a ‘high’. Research is still limited but an early study on pigeons showed a lower psychotropic potency than Delta-9 THC.

How does Delta-10 compare to Delta-8?

Delta-8 is said to be stronger than Delta-10, offering a ‘high’ that users report to be beneficial in aiding sleep and relaxation.

However, Delta-10 is milder with a lower psychotropic potency and said to encourage focus, motivation and concentration without making the user feel sleepy.

While the two compounds have similarities, Delta-8 is more likely to be used as a sleep aid while Delta-10 is more uplifting.

Is Delta-10 legal?

Delta-10 is legal in most US States if derived from the hemp plant. Under federal law, hemp plants are legal providing they have no more than 0.3% Delta-9, and Delta-10 falls into this category. It is, however, worth being aware that the FDA have not approved use of Delta-8 products, so we could assume that they would carry the same warnings for Delta-10.

In the UK, Delta-10 remains prohibited. While CBD derived from hemp is legal, Delta-10-THC has psychoactive properties and has not been categorised as an exempt product. It is therefore safe to presume it is illegal.

Where can I buy Delta-10?

Delta-10 is unquestionably difficult to produce and, without expert knowledge and supervision, it’s sensible to assume that unsafe products could be created. Any Delta-8 or Delta-10 products found in the UK market should be avoided unless prescribed by a specialised doctor.

In the US, again it’s wise to be aware of exactly what you are purchasing, looking for a Certificate of Analysis (SOA) to prove that the product has been tested.  Legalities and availability vary between states and, due to its low number of producers, the market value of Delta-10 is competitive making prices high.

In conclusion…

Delta-10 is a cannabinoid derived from cannabis. Like other THC-based compounds, it interacts with the ECS system. It also has some psychoactive properties but the effects are reported to be milder than Delta-9 and Delta-8. The suggested benefits of Delta-10 include alertness, creativity and motivation. There is much to research about this cannabinoid and it remains illegal in the UK.
