Why CBD Oil Quality Is Important
Nobody wants to spend money on something that’s low quality or doesn’t work – especially when it comes to our health. But with so many UK companies alone selling CBD products in a largely unregulated industry, how can you be sure you’re getting the best quality – and why does quality even matter anyway? Read on to find out why quality should be your number one concern when it comes to buying CBD, and what we do here at ULU to guarantee high CBD oil quality for our customers.
Why does CBD quality matter?
Why quality matters when selecting a CBD oil product.
Cannabidiol, known the world over as CBD, has shown signs of providing users with a number of benefits. These include pain relief and stress reduction.
“Cannabidiol is the hottest new medicine in mental health because the proper clinical trials do suggest it has clinical effects,” says Philip McGuire, professor of psychiatry and cognitive neuroscience at King’s College London. “It is the No 1 new treatment we’re interested in.”
The thing is, not all CBD products are equal. It is a burgeoning industry with an overwhelming variety of product types. From CBD oil, CBD vapes and CBD oral spray to CBD gummies and even CBD bath bombs. There’s lots of choice but a lack of proper quality control. By law, these supplements aren’t allowed to make claims of any therapeutic effects, which opens up another grey area. If you’re making CBD products you can more or less claim anything you like, as long as you don’t say that it will definitely have a certain effect. And in a world full of spin doctors, that means users must pay careful attention to the brand they buy from.
Testing of CBD products
The United Kingdom’s Centre for Medicinal Cannabis recently commissioned independent testing of 30 CBD oil brands, checking their quality against common contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals and solvents.
They also tested the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content in each CBD product. THC is the psychoactive element that causes the “high” effect when taking cannabis. High-quality CBD products should not have any THC. Anything over 0.001% THC is outside legal levels: that’s why ULU products contain less than 0.0005% THC. Essentially, zero.
The tests made for disappointing reading. 38% of products had less than half the advertised CBD content and, in one case, there was 0% CBD content, a result backed up by a second independent laboratory test. Only 38% of products tested were even within 10% of their advertised levels of CBD content.
Worse still, 45% of products tested were technically illegal in the United Kingdom, as they contained more than 0.04% THC content.
There were also some bizarre test results in amongst the 30 “leading” brands evaluated. Five had traces of dichloromethane, a type of solvent. One even contained the chemical compound cyclohexane, which is used in the production process of nylon.
Another of the CBD products had an ethanol level of 3.8%. This means it surpasses the minimum ABV to be considered an alcoholic beverage in the UK!
It’s also clear that consumers are concerned about the quality of CBD products they’re purchasing. A recent YouGov poll showed that suppliers that met recognised high standards (32%) and demonstrated the undetectable levels of pesticides or heavy metals (25%) were the most important factors for consumers in deciding which CBD products to purchase.
“Full compliance with the relevant regulatory bodies is the only way that the future cannabis industry can exist. It’s time that those operating within this sector wake up to this reality and embark on the journey to becoming serious and sustainable participants,” points out Greer Deal, Director at Global Regulatory Services. “This is the opportunity for the cannabis industry to shine in Europe.”
